Contract Description:
This contract is for Year #16 (May 1, 2024 to April 30, 2025) of the Basinwide Supplementation Evaluation project (2009-009-00). This project was developed to address recommendations put forth by the Ad Hoc Supplementation Workgroup (AHSWG, 2008), with the paramount objective being to provide targeted research, monitoring and evaluation (RM&E) support to tribally managed (or co-managed) supplementation and reintroduction efforts throughout the Columbia River Basin.

Given its basin wide nature, studies supported by the BSE Project are not confined to geographic, species or program type boundaries. Rather, the BSE Project is more appropriately structured by three general research objectives:
Research Objective #1: Monitor and evaluate supplemented populations of salmon and steelhead
Research Objective #2: Monitor and evaluate reintroduced populations of salmon and steelhead
Research Objective #3: Conduct experiments to investigate physiological processes and development of salmon and steelhead reared in a hatchery environment

All ongoing studies supported by the BSE Project fall beneath one of these three general research objectives and are outlined for CY#16 below.

Research Objective #1
•    Study 1.1: Estimate individual productivity and compare reproductive success between hatchery-origin and natural-origin spring Chinook in the Upper Yakima River, WA
•    Study 1.3: Estimate individual productivity and compare reproductive success between hatchery-origin and natural-origin spring/summer Chinook in Johnson Creek, ID
•    Study 1.4: Evaluate epigenome of salmon reared under different hatchery regimes during early life stages

Research Objective #2
•    Study 2.2: Perform genetic stock identification, productivity analyses and related assessments of tribally managed sockeye salmon reintroduction efforts in Yakima River and Deschutes River basins
•    Study 2.3: Estimate relatedness of spring Chinook populations throughout the Grande Ronde Basin from pre-supplementation (i.e., before 1982) to present

Research Objective #3
•    Study 3.1: Evaluate factors affecting propensity of male, hatchery-reared spring Chinook to precociously mature as age-2 minijacks
